While the UK isn’t known for scorching deserts, Folkestone benefits from a decent amount of sunshine. On average, Folkestone receives over 200 sunshine hours each in June, May, and July. Even in winter, December sees an average of over 50 sunshine hours. In other words, it allows your solar panels to maximise their efficiency, which in turns, leads to more solar generated electricity.
There were plans to cover 55 acres of land with solar panels and generate enough clean energy to power roughly 3,800 home on Pent Farm in Postling, near Folkestone, Kent. However, the project was rejected.
The intention behind it was to produce substantial solar energy to become a significant contributor to clean reducing the local areas carbon footprint. In addition, it was estimated that the generation capacity of 18 megawatts could have provided electricity to 3,800 homes throughout Folkestone.
Despite the intentions, the project was rejected for two main reasons. Firstly, the biggest concern was the potential negative impact on the surrounding landscape. The proposed location fell within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and authorities felt the vast array of solar panels would be visually intrusive. Secondly, the planning committee argued that the project contradicted local and national planning policies that prioritise protecting the natural beauty of the AONB. So, for the time being at least, this project will not be going ahead.
