Conservation Areas in Herne Bay

Depending on your postcode, you may be in a conservation area. Canterbury City Council has an interactive map whereby you can zoom into your street in Herne Bay to check whether or not it’s a conservation area. Should your postcode be within a conservation area, it’ll likely be considered okay under ‘permissible developments’ unless you own a historic property. But, that may not be an issue as a document published by the Council states “Renewable energy installations on historic buildings should be considered carefully so that they do not stand out visually. Rear or non-publicly viewable roof slopes are therefore the preferred location for solar panels and photovoltaic panels.” You can read more here. £46k Investment in Solar Panels for Herne Bay Pier’s Canopy

Did you know that Herne Bay Pier is powered by 370W Bifacial solar panels? The canopy that runs from the start of the pier to the end began leaking around 2018 to 2020. At which point, discussions around fixing it took place. Rather than just a replaced roof, the idea for a solar panelled roof came to light. With a total of £46k, the Herne Bay Pier Trust were able to remove and dispose of the old roof, install a new one, and add solar panels. The system generates 40,000 kW/h, which saves £4,000 a year. In addition, the carbon offset is the equivalent of planting 254 trees a year. This is all impressive! To learn more about this project, here’s the Trust’s document.

Government Grants and Subsidies for Solar Panels

0% VAT Until the 31st of March 2027

Available since the 1st of April 2022, the government hasn’t been charging VAT for some renewable energy solutions like solar PV panels. However, 0% VAT only applies until the 31st of March 2027, at which point it becomes 5%.

Herne Bay homeowners who want to save money on our solar panel packages, which include the PV panels and installation, you’ve got until March 2027. After this date, the VAT rate is lifted to 5%, and the solar panel installation cost will rise.

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

Since the 1st of January 2020, homeowners can sell excess solar energy to the grid. When your battery storage is full, your household is using little electricity, and your solar PV panels are generating lots of energy, you can receive between 1 and 7.5p a kW/h.

GreenMatch suggests homeowners could earn around £112 per year, give or take. This figure, in addition to reduced energy bills, adds to your annual savings.
