Let's Reduce Your Bills & Minimise Reliance on the Grid

When Hilary and David first contacted Baird & Brown, their primary concern wasn’t reducing electricity bills.

Living in a rural location, they regularly experienced power cuts and were looking for a solution that would provide greater energy security and help protect their home from future interruptions.

Like many homeowners exploring renewable energy, they had researched different technologies but wanted independent advice on the most appropriate solution for their property.

Rather than recommending equipment immediately, we began by understanding the property, the challenges they faced and what they wanted to achieve.

Understanding the Problem

Many renewable energy projects begin with a discussion about solar panels.

This project began with a discussion about resilience.

The property was in an area where power interruptions were common, creating uncertainty whenever outages occurred.

Hillary and David wanted confidence that essential systems within their home could continue operating during future power cuts while also improving the property’s overall energy efficiency.

This required a solution that went beyond simply installing solar panels.

The challenge was to design a complete system that could:

  • Generate renewable electricity
  • Store energy for later use
  • Provide backup power capability
  • Improve energy independence
  • Deliver long-term value

Our Survey & Design Process

At Baird & Brown, every recommendation begins with understanding the property.

Before discussing products or system sizes, we carried out a detailed survey and design process to understand:

  • Current electricity usage
  • Property layout
  • Future energy requirements
  • Opportunities for battery storage
  • Backup power requirements
  • Long-term customer objectives

This allowed us to design a system around the customer’s needs rather than trying to make the customer fit a standard package.

The result was a solution specifically tailored to the property and the challenges it faced.

The Solution

Following the survey and design process, we recommended a complete renewable energy and backup power solution consisting of:

Solar PV

A professionally designed solar array to generate renewable electricity throughout the day and reduce reliance on imported energy.

Battery Storage

A battery system designed to store excess solar generation for use later when electricity demand was higher.

Backup Capability

Designed to provide backup power during outages, keeping essential systems running.

Professional Installation

Once the design had been agreed, our team completed the installation with the same attention to detail we bring to every project.

From system positioning and cable management through to commissioning and customer handover, every aspect of the installation was completed to the highest standard.

We believe a well-designed system is only as good as the quality of the installation behind it.

That’s why workmanship remains one of the most important parts of every project we undertake.

Neat position and cable management

Well designed system installed correctly

The Result

The installation delivered exactly what the customers had hoped for.

The property now benefits from:

  • Renewable electricity generation
  • Increased energy independence
  • Battery storage for greater self-consumption
  • Enhanced protection against power interruptions
  • Reduced reliance on the grid

However, the most memorable moment came sooner than anyone expected.

The day after the installation was completed, the local area experienced a power cut.

For Hilary and David, it was an immediate real-world test of the system.

The solution performed exactly as intended, providing reassurance that the investment had achieved its primary objective.

For us, it was a perfect example of why understanding the customer’s needs at the beginning of a project is so important.

What This Project Demonstrates

This installation wasn’t about fitting as many solar panels as possible.

It was about understanding the customer’s concerns and designing the right solution.

Every property is different.

Every customer has different priorities.

For some homeowners, the goal is reducing energy bills.

For others, it’s energy independence, electric vehicle charging or protection against power cuts.

By taking the time to understand those objectives, we can design systems that genuinely meet the customer’s requirements.
