A solar installation should not feel like a mystery happening on your roof. When homeowners ask what happens during solar installation, they usually want to know two things: how disruptive it will be and whether the finished system will work properly with their home. A well-planned installation is orderly, safe and normally completed within a day or two, depending on the system.
The work begins well before the installation team arrives. Good results come from accurate surveying, sensible system design and careful electrical work – not from rushing panels onto a roof.
Before solar installation day
Once you have chosen a solar PV system, the installer will confirm the design against your property. This usually includes checking the roof construction, orientation, shading, available space and access around the house. They will also assess the consumer unit, incoming electrical supply and the best route for cables between the panels, inverter and, where included, battery.
This stage matters because every home is different. A south-facing roof may offer excellent generation, but an east-west layout can still be a very good choice if it better matches when your household uses electricity. Chimneys, dormers, nearby trees and roof windows can affect panel placement. The aim is not simply to fit the greatest possible number of panels, but to specify a system that is safe, productive and appropriate for the property.
Your installer will also deal with the relevant electricity network notification or application. What happens during solar installation on the day?

Fitting the roof mounting system

Installing the inverter, battery and electrical protection
While roof work is under way, or shortly afterwards, the electrical equipment is installed. The inverter converts the direct current generated by solar panels into the alternating current used by your home. It is commonly fitted in a garage, utility room, loft or another suitable location with adequate ventilation and access.
If you are having battery storage, the battery and associated control equipment will be positioned in the agreed location. Battery installation needs particular care because the equipment is heavy and must be mounted or placed safely, with suitable clearances. Not every space is appropriate, so this should have been considered during the survey rather than decided on the day.
The electrician will run cables between the array, inverter, battery and consumer unit. Some cable routes are visible, particularly in garages or loft spaces; others may be contained in trunking or routed through walls where practical. A good installer will aim for a neat route, but there can be a balance between appearance, accessibility and avoiding unnecessary disturbance to the building fabric.
Additional protective devices are installed to ensure the system meets the relevant electrical requirements. Depending on the design, this may include isolators, generation meters, surge protection and monitoring equipment. The system must integrate safely with your existing electrical installation rather than operate as a separate add-on.
Testing, commissioning and monitoring
Fitting the equipment is only part of the job. Before the system is handed over, it needs to be inspected, tested and commissioned. The installer checks electrical connections, panel performance, protective devices and communication between the inverter, battery and monitoring platform.
You may see the inverter start up and display generation data, although output will naturally depend on the weather and time of day. A bright summer afternoon gives a very different first reading from a cloudy winter morning. The key point is that the system is operating correctly, not that it reaches its maximum output during the handover.
If your system includes a battery, the installer will confirm how it is set to charge and discharge. This is worth discussing in plain terms. Some households prioritise storing daytime solar generation for evening use. Others use an off-peak electricity tariff to charge the battery overnight. The best settings depend on your tariff, household demand, export payments and how you want the system to work.
You should also be shown the monitoring app or portal. This allows you to see generation, home consumption, battery activity and grid import or export where the installed equipment supports it. Monitoring is useful, but it is not a reason to worry over every hourly change. Seasonal daylight, cloud cover and normal household use all affect the figures.
What documentation should you receive?
A professional installation should end with more than a working app. You should receive the documentation needed to understand, maintain and evidence the system. For an MCS-certified installation, this normally includes the MCS certificate, electrical installation certificate, commissioning information, equipment warranties and relevant network paperwork.
Keep these documents somewhere safe. They may be needed when arranging an export tariff, making a warranty query, selling the property or explaining the system to a future owner. Your installer should also explain basic maintenance expectations. Solar panels generally require little routine attention, but it is sensible to keep an eye on performance and arrange a check if output drops unexpectedly or you see a fault message.
How much disruption should you expect?
Most domestic solar installations create manageable disruption rather than major building work. There will be people working outside, some noise from drilling and movement through the property to reach the inverter location. Electricity may need to be switched off briefly while the new circuits are connected and tested.
The length of the work depends on the roof, the number of panels, access, consumer unit condition and whether a battery is included. A straightforward solar-only installation may be completed in a day. More complex systems, difficult cable routes or electrical upgrades can take longer. Wet or unsafe weather can also delay roof work, because safety has to come first.
